Jesse Aarons is a young boy living in a rural community, struggling with the pressures of school and a challenging family life. However, his expectations are upended when a new student named Leslie Burke arrives at his school and easily outpaces him and every other boy in the race. Drawn together by their vivid imaginations and a mutual sense of alienation from their peers, they venture into the nearby woods to construct their own sanctuary.
