In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex embarks on a routine voyage that soon transforms into a harrowing struggle for survival against the forces of nature. Departing from Nantucket, the crew is led by an experienced first mate and an untested captain whose competing visions for the journey create immediate friction on the high seas. Their expedition takes a disastrous turn when they encounter a whale of unprecedented size and intelligence, an animal that appears to possess a calculated, almost human sense of vengeance. As their vessel is crippled by this titan of the deep, the surviving men are cast adrift in the vast, unforgiving expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Stripped of their equipment and far from the reach of civilization, they must endure starvation, extreme weather, and the crushing weight of isolation.
