A story about how far we must travel to find the place where we belong.
About
Set in the picturesque landscapes of rural Maine during the early twentieth century, the story centers on Homer Wells, a young man who has spent his entire life residing within the walls of the St. Cloud’s Orphanage. Under the dedicated mentorship of Dr. Wilbur Larch, a compassionate and unconventional physician who runs the facility, Homer is trained in the medical arts. Despite having never received formal schooling, he develops a profound aptitude for medicine and becomes the doctor’s most trusted apprentice. However, as Homer matures, he begins to feel the weight of his restricted existence and the burden of Dr. Larch’s lofty expectations for his future. Seeking to find his own place in the world, Homer eventually makes the difficult decision to leave the only home he has ever known. His journey leads him to a sprawling apple orchard, where he finds employment among a close-knit group of seasonal workers. Amidst the harvest, he encounters a young couple whose presence forces him to confront his own desires and moral principles. As he navigates this unfamiliar territory, Homer must balance the lessons instilled in him by his mentor with the realities of an independent life. The narrative explores the complexities of human connection, the difficulty of charting one’s own path, and the challenging decisions that define a person's character as he is forced to decide where his true loyalties and duties ultimately lie.
