They beat him. They deprived him. They ridiculed him. They broke his heart. But they couldn’t break his spirit.

About

Set against the bleak, post-industrial landscape of a working-class mining town in Northern England, this poignant drama follows the life of Billy Casper, a fragile fifteen-year-old boy struggling to navigate the hardships of his daily existence. At school, Billy is a target for the relentless cruelty of bullies and the dismissive apathy of teachers, while at home, he faces a volatile environment dominated by an indifferent mother and a harsh, temperamental older brother. Faced with a future that seems to offer nothing more than the grim inevitability of the local pits, Billy lives largely on the margins of society, feeling misunderstood and utterly trapped by his circumstances. His life takes a transformative turn when he discovers a young kestrel in a nearby field. Fascinated by the bird, Billy begins to teach himself the intricate art of falconry, pouring his dedication and quiet intellect into training the creature he names Kes. Through this burgeoning bond, Billy finds a rare sense of autonomy and a rare refuge from the pressures of his environment. As he commits himself to the kestrel, he begins to develop a newfound confidence and a unique purpose that stands in stark contrast to the stifling expectations placed upon him by the world around him. This deeply human story explores the profound connection between a boy and his hawk, capturing the tension between the harsh realities of a rigid society and the desperate, flickering hope of an individual searching for meaning.
