When a young nun takes her own life at a cloistered abbey in Romania, the Vatican initiates an investigation into the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death. To handle this delicate and haunting assignment, they dispatch Father Burke, a priest burdened by his own troubled past and personal demons, alongside Sister Irene, a novice who has yet to take her final vows and is plagued by prophetic visions. As the pair arrives at the isolated, decaying gothic fortress, they discover a site steeped in ancient secrets and an oppressive, malevolent atmosphere that defies rational explanation.
