Roderick Andrew Anthony Jude McDowall (17 September 1928 – 3 October 1998) was an English-American actor, director, and photographer whose screen presence became closely identified with science fiction and imaginative storytelling. He is especially remembered for playing Cornelius and Caesar in the original Planet of the Apes film series, roles that placed him at the center of one of the most influential franchises in genre cinema. McDowall also transitioned successfully to television, starring as Galen in the spin-off series, bringing the same intensity and intelligence to smaller-screen storytelling. Beyond apes and time-bound epics, he continued to work across film and voice roles, including memorable performances such as the character in A Bug’s Life (1998), demonstrating his range from live-action dramatic work to family-oriented animated adventure.
