Ronny Yu Yan-Tai (born July 1, 1950) is a Hong Kong-based director, producer, and screenwriter known for shaping action-forward and genre-driven films that blend kinetic pacing with distinctive visual style. After an education at Ohio University, he built a career that spans both Hong Kong and American productions, collaborating across different production cultures while maintaining a consistent command of storytelling in high-concept settings. Yu is especially associated with horror and thriller sensibilities, including directing Bride of Chucky (1998) and taking the genre into major franchise territory with Freddy vs. Jason (2003). He has also directed character- and style-driven action adventures such as The 51st State (2001), and later helmed the emotionally grounded martial-arts drama Fearless (2006), where he served both as director and producer, demonstrating range beyond genre spectacle.
