Joseph Aaron “Joe” Carnahan (born May 9, 1969) is an American independent film director, screenwriter, producer, and occasional actor whose work is known for hard-edged momentum, grounded dialogue, and a strong command of crime and action storytelling. Across features and television-adjacent projects, he has developed a reputation for blending high-stakes plots with sharply drawn characters, moving fluidly between heist and vigilante material, military and special-ops themes, and stylish genre crowd-pleasers. Carnahan first came to wider attention for an intense blend of suspense and crime in projects such as Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane, followed by acclaimed genre work like Narc, Smokin’ Aces, and The A-Team, where his direction emphasized pace, tactical detail, and escalating tension. In the catalog, he is credited as actor, director, and writer for The Rip (2026), directs and appears in Shadow Force (2025), and takes multiple behind-the-camera and on-screen roles in Boss Level (2021), demonstrating a hands-on approach that spans writing, directing, producing, and performance. He is also the brother of screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan.
