About
When Dave Johnson, a famously friendly and optimistic professional from the Midwest, decides to uproot his wife and son to start a new chapter in Los Angeles, he is eager to embrace his new surroundings with open arms and a helping hand. However, the culture shock proves to be immediate when they move into a tight-knit, historically resilient community that is not necessarily looking for a new best friend. The central friction of their transition is personified by Calvin Butler, their next-door neighbor who is deeply protective of his home and wary of the changes that come with newcomers who do not understand the unspoken rules of the block. While Dave operates on a philosophy of radical neighborliness, constantly trying to bridge the gap with gestures of goodwill and persistent kindness, Calvin views these intrusive acts of friendliness with deep suspicion and skepticism. The series follows the ongoing tug-of-war between two men from vastly different backgrounds as they navigate misunderstandings, social friction, and the gradual process of building a community bond. As the Johnsons attempt to plant roots in an environment that often views their presence as an outsider disruption, they must learn to reconcile their idealistic worldview with the reality of their new life, while the Butlers find themselves pushed to reevaluate their own guarded perceptions of those who move in next door. Through a series of everyday domestic dilemmas and awkward social collisions, the show explores how a simple desire to be a good neighbor can be met with both resistance and unexpected common ground.
