After the devastating loss of their unborn child, Kate and John Coleman attempt to rebuild their fractured lives by welcoming a new member into their family. They visit a local orphanage and find themselves drawn to Esther, a poised and remarkably precocious nine-year-old girl with a troubled past. Upon bringing Esther into their suburban home, the Colemans initially believe they have found the perfect addition to their household. However, the atmosphere in the home begins to shift almost immediately as a series of unsettling and increasingly dangerous incidents occur around the family. While John remains captivated by Esther’s charm and intellect, Kate grows deeply suspicious of the young girl, sensing that there is a profound darkness masked by her polite demeanor.
